Harris homer sinks Cubs

March 8th, from the Associated Press

Rookie Willie Harris hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning Friday, lifting the White Sox to an 8-7 win over a split squad of Cubs.

After going 4-2 last season against their cross-town rivals, the Sox improved to 2-0 this spring over the Cubs.

Cubs shortstop Mark Bellhorn went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while the Sox were led by Carlos Lee's 3-for-3 effort.

Right-hander Julian Tavarez started for the Cubs, allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings of work. White Sox starter Todd Ritchie, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the off-season, had his second straight rocky start, allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings. He also walked two.

"The two walks were the most disappointing part of my day," Ritchie said. "My command wasn't there. That will come as I increase my pitches. Command is a feel-type thing. That's what spring training is for."

Ritchie, who allowed five runs and five hits in 2 2-3 innings against Arizona last week, said he wasn't worried about his slow start this spring.

"I'll feel pressure when my turn comes up on April 2, or whatever," Ritchie said. "That's when they count."

Cubs prospect Mark Prior, a pitcher the Cubs selected with their No. 2 overall pick in the amateur draft, allowed just one hit, while striking out seven, in three innings.

"He was impressive," manager Jerry Manuel said. "He's legit. He'll make things interesting for them over there."
