Parque throws two scoreless innings; Sox lose 14-9

March 4th, from

The San Diego Padres pounded out 20 hits Monday afternoon as they built a 10-run lead, then held off a late rally to beat the Chicago White Sox, 14-9 at Tucson Electric Park.

The Padres got going only after Sox starter Jim Parque threw a pair of scoreless innings in his first start since undergoing surgery last May for a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. Parque gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one.

Sean Burroughs and Darren Blakely, who had two doubles, led the Padres attack with three hits apiece. Bobby Jones allowed two runs and five hits in two innings. The White Sox received two hits each from Mark Johnson, Kenny Lofton, Tim Hummel and Joe Crede.

Also making his spring debut was former minor-league player of the year Jon Rauch, another Sox pitcher who had shoulder surgery last season. Rauch didn't fare as well, giving up three hits and three runs, two earned, in 1 1/3 innings. Matt Ginter, who did not have shoulder surgery last season, was touched for seven hits and six runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Both teams scored five runs in the ninth inning.

White Sox notes: The Sox had two more stolen bases Monday to run their streak to 11 straight this spring without getting caught. That ended, though, when Royce Clayton was cut down by Adan Amezcua in the fourth inning.
