Sox lose Opener 13-6

March 1st, from

The Arizona Diamondbacks hit three home runs and collected 15 hits as they defeated the Chicago White Sox, 13-6, Friday afternoon in front of 9,174 at Tucson Electric Park in the Cactus League opener for both teams.

Curt Schilling started for Arizona and worked three scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing two hits. He did not earn the win, however, as Rick Helling allowed the White Sox to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning.

Arizona took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Danny Bautista and Spivey helped put the game away with a grand slam to the left-field corner in the fifth.

Erubiel Durazo and Rod Barajas also homered for Arizona, with Durazo's blast landing on the street well beyond the right-field wall.

Jose Valentin, Paul Konerko and Magglio Ordonez homered for the White Sox, who had 12 hits of their own.
