Pre-Game Report

The Sox picked right up where they left off yesterday, looking like a pathetic rabble waiting to clean out their lockers and scatter in four directions once next Friday's strike date comes.  Then a miracle happened, and the Sox found they truly do have a heart--just like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz .  Sox win 5-3 over Tampa Bay.

Now if only Jerry Manuel could find a brain?

They truly looked like they would suck all nine innings.  Starter Danny Wright fed his gopher in the second inning and the Sox were down 1-0.  Like clockwork, the Sox offense came to bat in the bottom of the inning and blew a scoring opportunity.  Two walks and a single had the bases loaded for Willie Harris.  He popped out.

Would this be a good time to remind everyone the Sox were playing the Tampa Bay Devil Rays?  The Sox are getting outplayed by the most pathetic outfit in baseball.

The Devil Dogs scratched out another run in the fourth, but Wright was holding up well.  Unfortunately, the Sox offense was in a deep slumber.  They had two hits through five innings.  Pathetic.

No big surprise that Jose Valentin innocently led off the sixth inning with a walk.  No surprise that Frank Thomas struck out next.  But Carlos Lee, a starter for Magglio Ordonez who was scratched late, hit a two-run shot and just like that the Sox were tied.

Hey, maybe Tampa Bay really does suck worse than our Sox?

Joe Crede swatted another two-run shot with Jeff Liefer scoring ahead of him, and just like that, the Sox were winning 4-2.

Even Frank Thomas got in the act, salvaging an otherwise ugly 0-fer performance by punching one deep in the seventh, 5-2 Sox.

Rubber game tomorrow.  With the season likely over in a matter of days, being better than Tampa Bay is something to shoot for, eh Sox Fans?

The strike can't happen soon enough.

Tinkerer Update:
Frank bats #3.  Maggs' late scratch gives Jerry some cover--this time.
