Enquiring Sox Fans want to know!

If only Sox Fans knew...
Last Series vs. Minnesota
  • Pathetically, the Sox and Devil Rays split a 4-game set at Tampa Bay between August 2-5.
  • The Sox were outscored by Tampa Bay, 24-17.
Totally Biased Sox Notes
  • The White Sox are 8-9 against the American League East thus far this season.
  • Magglio Ordonez has simply been on fire.  Since the All-Star break, the snubbed outfielder has hit .362, has a slugging percentage of .698, and has hit 13 homers, nearly double the output of the next highest on the team in the same time span (Carlos Lee with 7).  He has also driven in 33 runs, accounting for over 20% of team's RBIs since the break (the Sox have 156 team RBIs).
  • Why is Gary Glover still in the rotation?  As a starter in 2002, Glover has a 5-6 record and a whopping 5.66 ERA in 90.2 IP (17 games started).  However, coming out of the pen, Glover has been lights out.  In 16 appearances totaling 19.1 innings, Glover has 2 holds, a save, a WHIP of 1.09 and a .93 ERA.
  • Speaking of starters and relievers, the Sox bullpen, though sometimes suspect, has been pretty stable this season.  In a combined 382.2 innings of relief work, the Sox have a team bullpen ERA of 3.95, which is surprisingly lower than some contenders such as Arizona (4.05) and Boston (4.34).  However, the starters have been a different story.  In 724 innings, Sox starters have allowed 424 earned runs, good enough for a 5.27 team ERA, worse than notable doormats such as the Cubs (3.92), Cleveland (4.89), Kansas City (5.02), Detroit (4.61), and even Texas (5.14).
Know thy Enemy!
  • Is there anyone else to talk about besides All-Star Randy Winn?  At .309, Winn is 9th in the American League in batting.  The next highest Devil Ray (Steve Cox, .263) is tied for 49th place in the AL with Seattle's Bret Boone.
  • Can the Sox help avoid Todd Ritchie some embarrassment?  At 2-13, Tanyon Sturtze is tied for second in the American League in losses (with Royal Jeff Suppan).  With Ritchie on the DL, Sturtze is primed to make a move at the league lead in losses.  However, Sturtze recently snapped a 9-game winless streak on August 18th as he picked up the "W" in an 8-6 Tampa Bay win over Kansas City.
  • Tampa Bay's 17-44 road record is the worst in baseball.  At 15-35, they also rank dead last in the AL in games played on grass.  However, neither of these should surprise us too much, since they have the worst overall record in baseball.
  • Barring a remarkable turnaround, the Devil Rays are set to be the first team since the 1975-79 Braves to lose 90 games in 5 consecutive seasons.  Don't worry, though, Floridians, as the all time record is 10 seasons in a row set by the Phillies between 1936-45.  You'll be contracted waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before that happens.
What to watch for!
  • Tinkering galore!
  • Tanyon Sturtze vs. Hal McRae II (The Gatorade Cooler's Revenge)!
  • Randy Winn, Aubrey Huff, and Steve Cox to go yard off Gary Glover in the first inning.
  • Who cares?  Both these teams suck.
