Strike will effect 2003 Sox payroll (The Sox lost, too)

If major-league players go on strike Aug. 30, one of the first casualties on the home front will be the diminishing White Sox payroll.

Confirming a Tribune report that the Sox's plans for 2003 will be predicated on whether there is a work stoppage, general manager Ken Williams said Tuesday a players strike will affect the payroll negatively.

"There will be budget ramifications, sure," Williams said. "Where we are right now, I couldn't speculate."

The Sox went on to lose 5-0 to Minnesota for their sixth straight loss in front of 16,912 at Comiskey Park.

Jim Parque, pitching for a shot at next year's rotation, allowed five runs on five hits in 51/3 innings, recording his second loss in three starts. The Sox have lost eight of 12 games to the Twins this year and 22 of 31 since the start of 2001.

Kyle Lohse (11-7) notched the victory with a four-hit shutout, his first career complete game, while Jacque Jones continued to taunt the Sox from the outset. Jones started the game with an opposite-field home run, the second straight day he had led off with a homer, and the Twins were off and running again. After two first-inning singles, the Sox could muster only two more singles the rest of the night.

Sox manager Jerry Manuel said Parque's performance was "OK," which means he was good enough to earn another start for the Sox.

"I'm going to use this as a springboard," said Parque, who termed it his best outing of the year.
