Enquiring Sox Fans want to know!

If only Sox Fans knew...
Last Series vs. Seattle
  • The Mariners won 2 of 3 from the White Sox at Comiskey, April 30-May 2.
  • The Mariners outscored the Sox, 25-17.
  • The final game of the set was the infamous "Mike Cameron takes BP off Sox pitching" game.  Seattle won the contest, 15-4.
Totally Biased Sox Notes
  • Thanks to the consistency of Magglio Ordonez, and the recent resurge of Paul Konerko, the Sox are the only team in the American League to sport three hitters in the Top 5 of the batting race.  Ordonez and Konerko's .318 batting average is tied with Yankee center fielder Bernie Williams for third in the AL, behind Kansas City's Mike Sweeney (.355) and Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki (.346).  The only other teams to have 2 players in the Top 10 in AL Batting are the Yankees (Williams, .318, T-3rd; Jason Giambi, .310, T-8th) and the Red Sox (Nomar Garciaparra, .311, 7th; Shea Hillenbrand, .310, T-8th).
  • After Jon Garland started the 2nd half slowly, he complained of dead arm.  Is Mark Buehrle suffering from the same?   In his last 11 starts, Buehrle's ERA has climbed from 2.80 (the lowest it had been since April 22) to its current 3.77.  Also, Buehrle has been 5-4 in that span, a stark contrast to his 8-3 coming into June 9.
  • Now that Kenny Lofton is in San Francisco and Ray Durham is in Oakland, the team leader for the Sox in stolen bases is Magglio Ordonez, with 6.  Can anyone on this team do better than Maggs in ANY offensive category?  Even more comical, the fleet-footed Frank Thomas is tied for fourth on the team with 2 stolen bases this year (with Tony Graffanino and Willie Harris).
  • While Dan Wright has been prone to inconsistency, he has done well against the Mariners, historically, with a career 3.05 ERA against Seattle.
Know thy Enemy!
  • Think JB was a little upset to see the Kingdome gone when he showed up in Seattle?  In 21 games indoors, Baldwin has posted a 13-3 record with a 2.90 ERA, substantially more impressive than his record outdoors, where Baldwin is 66-64 with a 5.21 ERA.
  • While they may not be as well-known a tandem as Derek Lowe and Pedro Martinez, the Mariners' Jaime Moyer and Joel Piniero are the only two other teammates besides Boston's 1-2 punch in the Top 10 AL ERA Title Race.  Moyer is 4th in the league (and the best lefty) with a 2.72 ERA and Piniero is 10th with a 3.26 ERA.  Mark Buehrle, the top Sox pitcher, by comparison is 16th in the AL.
  • Seattle has quite the little offense/pitching punch.  They're offense, which only ranks 10th in the AL in home runs, is 4th in the league in scoring behind New York, Boston, and the White Sox (and no, that's not a typo).  Their .277 team batting average is also good enough for 5th in the AL.  Pitching-wise, Seattle has given up the 2nd least amount of runs in the AL, 10 more than the leader, the Red Sox (and nearly 150 less than the White Sox), and their 3.86 team ERA is 3rd in the AL behind Boston and Anahiem.
  • Ever since going berserk against the Sox on May 2 (the four HR game), Seattle center fielder Mike Cameron has cooled off.  Since that day, his average has dropped over 40 points (.271-.229) and his slugging has dropped over 150 points (.615-.455).  After May 2nd, he was on pace to hit 54 home runs for the 2002 season.  Now, he's on pace to hit half that, 27.
What to watch for!
  • JAMES BALDWIN!  Yay!
  • Jerry Manuel to get Willie Harris some valuable time in as catcher.  You know, in case he ever needs him there.
  • Josh Paul to keep on suckin'.
  • We assure you, Mike Cameron will not hit four homers off Jim Parque this series.
