SoxFest Fun with WSI

Totally Biased Sox Fans share laughs at the White Sox Interactive booth

Feb. 5  SoxFest 2002 set a record for totally biased Sox Fans--thanks to White Sox Interactive!  We set some kind of record for every sort of gimmick we could think of.  If you couldn't find something to like at the White Sox Interactive booth, you simply weren't trying.  Eric Soderholm, the great power-hitting thirdbasemen of the 1977 Southside Hitmen stopped by Sunday to sign autographs.  Author Dan Helpingstine signed copies of his new book, Through Hope & Despair.  For the truly one-of-a-kind collectible, WSI's French Fry Boy was signing fast food restaurant napkins.  At the end of three days, we were sold out on the Dairy Queen variety.

Arm-Wrestling Showdown.

The big traffic stopper was the WSI Arm-Wrestling Shortstop Showdown.  Pitting Royce Clayton supporters versus Jose Valentin supporters, we kept tally of the score on our official scoreboard inside the booth.  It drew plenty of quizzical looks.  The big showdown came on Saturday when the Chicago Tribune's Sox beat writer, Paul Sullivan, stopped by.  He agreed to arm wrestle WSI webmaster, George Bova.  Totally Biased vs. Totally Unbiased--who would win?  The world will never know since it was only  staged.  For the record, Sully says he can take PaleHoseGeorge.  We just might have to schedule a rematch.

The arm-wrestling tournament was tied at 3-3 entering the final day of competition.  After two days of finding nobody willing to arm-wrestle on behalf of Royce Clayton, the WSI booth had two Clayton supporters show up Sunday morning and put quick wins on the board for "The Choice."  The score was 5-4 Clayton entering the last hours of the show.

Then by providence, Valentin supporters were shocked to see the weak-armed shortstop beating their guy.  Clayton went down in defeat two quick times.  Add a final victory for "Manos" late in the day and the final score was Jose Valentin 7, Royce Clayton 5, in a convincing come from behind victory.  What did WSI prove with this tournament?  Hell if we know.

Meeting totally biased Sox Fans, old and new.

It's impossible to recount all the WSI community members who stopped by to say hello.  There was a steady flow of them throughout the three days.  We were glad to meet all of you.  It was also great to meet so many Sox Fans from our lurker community.  Clearly the message board is only a small fraction of the totally biased Sox Fans surfing the WSI website.  Thanks for your words of encouragement and support!  We took pictures of all the Sox tattoos--which of course are the ultimate symbol of totally biased attitude!

You can buy merchandise at our online Supporters Shop, too!

Best of all were the literally hundreds of Sox Fans who approached our booth who had never seen or heard of White Sox Interactive before.  We hope you are reading this right now, and extend our most heartfelt, "Welcome!"  We knew there were even more totally biased Sox Fans out there and we're glad you have found us.  To help you learn your way around our website, here's a guide to some of the best features at White Sox Interactive.

Welcome Sox Fans!

T-shirt winners!

The totally biased Sox t-shirts were a big hit.  We even sold out a size!  (Don't worry--we're ordering more).  Hundreds of Sox Fans took place in our drawing to win a free one.  One strange character repeatedly visited our booth, waiting to see us draw the winners at the conclusion of Saturday's session.  You would think we were passing out gold coins!  He was there (along with a few others) when we drew the names, and immediately left when his name wasn't drawn.  I guess that flea-bitten soccer team scarf he was wearing would just have to last the rest of the winter.

Nearly all the winners have responded to our emails and phone calls.  They are listed on this page.  Congratulations to them, and thanks to everyone who participated.

More fun to follow.

We have a couple dozen photographs of sights from the WSI booth and around SoxFest, including some priceless shots of Josh Paul giving youngsters instructions on baserunning.  Presumably, how to take the extra base on Ichiro's arm wasn't discussed.  We'll post all these photographs shortly.  Be sure to check back.  You might be on the world wide web.  Such a deal!
