White Sox trade Howry to Boston

MINNEAPOLIS - While Ray Durham, Kenny Lofton and Sandy Alomar Jr. all saw their trades coming, Bob Howry never believed he was going to be traded.

It wasn't until his wife, Dena, reached him on his cell phone just when he was arriving at the Metrodome Wednesday afternoon that he learned a friend had heard on the radio he'd been traded.

"I came walking down the stairs and as soon as I hit the bottom to walk in the (clubhouse) door I saw heads peeking in and thought 'I guess I have been traded'."

The Sox made their fourth deal in the last week, sending the right-handed Howry to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday for two minor league pitchers and cash considerations.

The other deals were mainly to open spots for kids, and while Howry's absence will give Matt Ginter and Rocky Biddle a chance to find success in a set-up role, 22-year-old minor league pitcher Franklin Francisco is a bona fide prospect.
