Pre-Game Report

When your team has played like crap for most of the last three months, and you suddenly find yourself trying to build upon a four-game winning streak, what is your first instinct?

If you answered playing the hot hand, you would be scratching your head right along with most other Sox Fans after this one.  Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel strikes again!  The Sox lose another one with a brain-dead effort at the plate, 2-1 to Minnesota in ten innings.

Willie Harris was back in the leadoff slot.  He started the game with a single against Sox killer Joe Mays.  Aaron Rowand was next, back in the #2 slot.  He worked Mays for a walk.  So far, so good.

Next comes reserve Jeff Liefer, getting his first start in weeks, in no less than the #3 slot of The Tinkerer's lineup.  What is this man thinking?  4-6-3 and Mays is nearly out of the inning.

Still, Mays is wild.  Facing Magglio Ordonez, he can't find the strike zone on three consecutive pitches, bringing home Harris from third base on a wild pitch.  Ordonez walked, but the slumping Paul Konerko grounds out and the Sox are lucky to get even one run from this excellent scoring opportunity.

Proceed with eight straight innings of corpseball.  A pair of singles by Frank Thomas in the seventh and Mark Johnson in the eighth is all that broke up a conga line of ineptitude by Sox hitters that stretched clear into the tenth inning.

Jon Garland's effort was wasted.  He walked too many guys (4), and one of them came home in the third inning to tie the game 1-1.  Still, his six innings of one-run, three-hit pitching should have been more than enough for the Sox offense to deliver the win.

Instead, we had the black hole that was Jeff Liefer in the #3 hole, a giant 0 for 4 with a strikeout.  Other giants of Sox ineptitude were Konerko (0 for 4), and Jose Valentin (0 for 3).

The bullpen was sharp.  Damaso Marte appeared to be cruising, striking out the side in the eighth inning.  He got two quick outs in the ninth, but The Tinkerer couldn't leave it alone.  Antonio Osuna was given the job of getting the third out, and then pitching the tenth inning, too.

He never got the second or third out of that inning.  A leadoff double made the outcome inevitable.  The Tinkerer had five infielders and only two outfielders for the climactic finish--a piece of managerial genius right up there with the ol' National League double-switch.  The Tinkerer loves strategy!

Gee, why didn't it work?  Sox Fans would have been more surprised if it had.

Sox Clubhouse "Pick to Click" Winner

Jon Garland

One run and three hits allowed across six innings pitched.  He didn't even come close to winning this ballgame, thanks to Jerry Manuel and the inept Sox lineup.
