Pre-Game Report

While sweeping Kansas City doesn't quite rank with what we Sox Fans enjoyed back in June, 2000 when we swept the Indians and Yankees in back-to-back road series, you can't be too choosey when you're a fan of the 2002 Sox.  Rocky Biddle gets the spot start for the "injured" Todd Ritchie, the bullpen pulls through, and the Sox win 4-2.

Sox Fans, what do you call it when your team wins all the games in a series?  Yeah, it was one of those.  Figures just when the team starts playing well, MLB takes the Sox' well earned off-day and sends them on a two-hour bus ride to play an exhibition game in the fake-birthplace of the game.  What's next--a cameo appearance in the Little League World Series?

With trade rumor running rampant, Todd Ritchie suddenly develops an injury preventing today's regular start.  With 13 losses behind his name already, what possible good would come of allowing this worthless slug to scare off potential buyers?  Kenny Williams has a big enough mess to clean up already--albeit one of his own making.

So in Ritchie's place, rehabbing reliever Rocky Biddle got the start.  Not a bad day's work either!  He went four innings allowing two earned runs, enough for Sox hitters to give him a 3-2 lead as he exited the game.

The biggest of the Sox hitters was #9 Royce Clayton.  His two-out rbi-double in the second inning staked the Sox to the lead, and his leadoff double led to the Sox to recapturing the lead, for good, in the fourth.  The middle of the Sox lineup was hot, too.  Carlos Lee and Magglio Ordonez each had two hits and an rbi each.

The real story came in the fifth.  With Biddle spent, Bob Howry entered the game to pitch three innings scoreless relief.  Still-in-the-doghouse Keith Foulke followed with one scoreless inning, and Damaso Marte followed that with another scoreless inning, too.  Collectively they struck out four hitters, walked nobody, and gave up no hits.  Kansas City was stuck on two runs scored for the last seven innings, thanks mostly to the Sox bullpen.

Sure it's a cheap-thrills sweep.  But honestly, what else do we Sox Fans have going these days?  The real team news is coming from the Sox front office where the most incompetent general manager in organized baseball is spinning his magic.

You almost dread to listen to the radio or read the morning's newspaper.  Ah, life as a Sox Fan...
