The dismantling of the Sox

And so it begins.† The dismantling of the Chicago White Sox ďKids Can PlayĒ edition has begun with the trade of Ray Durham to Oakland for a 25-year-old minor leaguer about whom Aís GM Billy Beane says, ďWe may have rushed him in to AAA.Ē† That may be true.† After all, he does have a 6.03 ERA, so he apparently isnít really hacking it at that level.†

Unfortunately if you canít hack AAA ball by the age of 25, itís pretty unlikely that youíll advance beyond that level.† So essentially we traded in a guy who is batting .298, who scores over 100 runs per season, for a guy who will fill space.†

I sense other things afoot, though.† As someone suggested, the Sox now lead the world in employing pitchers named Jon (Garland, Rauch, and now Adkins).† Perhaps Prof. Chaos (Sox GM Kenny Williams)is going for a new record of sorts, pitchers named Jon with torn labrums.† Now that would be an accomplishment worthy of the Professor.

Reports in the press and elsewhere from Winston-Salem indicate that the class A Warthogs are being stocked with players who are sadly lacking in the fundamentals and are not being taught the fundamentals of the game.

At least we know that as Hawk and DJ noted Friday night, Prof. Chaos does have a long-term plan for this organization.† Unfortunately the plan would seem to be to hire people as incompetent as you (or even more so if possible) in charge of training the players.† Teach them to play fundamentally unsound baseball.† Then when they reach the major league level, the Sox will continue to stink up the joint, just as they do now.† The fans will stay away in droves, and The Chairman will either be forced to move the team or sell to someone from out of town who will move the team.

I had a number of people comment on my conspiracy theory, some agreeing, others stating that these guys are just plain incompetent.† Interestingly enough, no one wrote disagreeing with the general premise that the people running the Chicago White Sox are running them into the ground.

It is possible that those who disagree with my conspiracy theory are right.† It could be that these guys are just idiots.† After all, the Chairman once did hire Hawk Harrelson to be his GM!

I saw Dave Wills Tuesday and he asked me if I was okay, what with all of the Mariotti-like columns Iíve been writing lately about Prof. Chaos and Gen. Disarray.† The comparison to Mariotti cut me to the quick!† One thing I try not to do is windsock my way through life as Mariotti does.† I canít think of one issue that he hasnít taken both sides on, often switching sides within days, if not in mid-column.† I try to wait at least a month before quietly switching.† †

I canít be mad at Dave, though.† A little later he warned Rocky Biddle and Jose Valentin when someone asked what they thought of Gen. Disarray as a manager, ďBe careful what you say.† I see Hal writing things down, and heís Jerry Manuelís biggest fan.Ē† My sides are still aching!†

Dave, I love ya!
