Business as usual for Sox after trade

Jose Valentin walked into the White Sox clubhouse Friday carrying boxes. Not that the veteran shortstop was planning to pack, but Valentin and the rest of the Sox know it could happen.

"That's the way it goes,'' Carlos Lee said, summing up his teammates' sentiments about the trade a day earlier of veteran second baseman Ray Durham to Oakland for a minor-league pitcher. "We have no control over it. We just go out and play. You can't worry about that.''

Durham's impending free agency, his $6.3 million salary--part of which the Sox must still pay--and the team's dramatic fall from contention all were factors in his departure. They also will figure into other trades general manager Ken Williams may try to conclude by Wednesday's non-waiver trading deadline or beyond it.

"I can't tell you if there is a 'next [move],''' manager Jerry Manuel said Friday before the Sox hosted the Kansas City Royals at Comiskey Park. "I don't sit around and wait for trades or anticipate trades. I just try to make out a lineup that will help us win.
