Trader Ken looking to dump salary

General manager Ken Williams was in Charlotte on Friday to see the Sox' Class AAA farm team.

But his telephone is available wherever he goes, and he's ready to make another trade should the right offer come for any number of Sox players, especially those headed for free agency who have hefty contracts.

That combination led to Ray Durham's exit to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, with the Sox picking up part of his remaining $6.3 million salary in exchange for Class AAA pitcher Jon Adkins. The seemingly one-sided deal is indicative of the Sox' salary-dumping mood now that the team has fallen behind the Minnesota Twins by double digits.

"If Ray Durham was making $600,000 instead of $6 million, he'd still be here,'' said catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., who along with shortstop Royce Clayton and center fielder Kenny Lofton will be free agents. "The main thing is the salary, not the talent or ability to play. I understand. Obviously, Ray was getting hot and with free agency, they wanted to get something for him.
