Old news: Ritchie shelled, Sox lose

A couple of hours into his second stint as White Sox pitching coach, Don Cooper strolled to the mound as Rocky Biddle entered the game in relief.

Biddle promptly served up a three-run home run to Minnesota right fielder Dustan Mohr on his first pitch, continuing a seasonlong trend in Sox games:

No matter the name of the Sox pitching coach, a trip to the mound is usually a prescription for disaster.

Cooper's first day as Nardi Contreras' replacement was one he just as soon would forget. Sox pitchers were drilled early and often in a 11-6 loss to the Twins before 32,352 at Comiskey Park.

On a wild night with tensions running high, Todd Ritchie was shelled again and lost for the major-league leading 14th time, manager Jerry Manuel was ejected for arguing a close play at the plate and Biddle was ejected for plunking catcher A.J. Pierzynski after Mohr's home run capped a six-run sixth.

Is everybody happy?

The Sox not only fell 14 games behind the division-leading Twins but thoroughly embarrassed themselves in doing so as well. General manager Ken Williams is prepared to rip the team apart by July 31, perhaps starting with Jose Valentin, who basically waved a white flag Sunday with his candid assessment that the Sox had virtually no chance of catching the Twins.
