Pre-Game Report

As bad as the Sox have sucked, the Indians sucked more Tuesday night in Cleveland.  The Sox leave twelve men on base, including bases loaded twice, but still pull out a dramatic 5-4 victory on a ninth inning homerun by Magglio Ordonez.

Woo hoo!  Had 'em all the way, didn't we Sox Fans!

Maggs got the offense started in the very first inning.  His two-run shot spotted Danny Wright a two-run lead before he ever took the mound.  It stayed that way until the third inning when Wright coughed up the lead.  Things went from bad to worse when Wright was tagged by Ellis Burks and his bad back for a two-run dinger, and the Sox trailed 4-2.

Meanwhile, the Sox offense was doing its usual sputtering.  The Sox had the bases loaded and nobody out in the fourth inning, but failed to score.  Sandy Alomar struck out swinging, Royce Clayton struck out looking, and Ray Durham popped out.  Brilliant.

Hawk Harrelson practically began hyperventilating cheering Royce in the sixth, when the shortstop came to the plate again with the bases loaded.  Rather than take a chance embarrassing himself twice, Clayton swung at the first pitch and managed to bloop one into short left field, plating two runs, and tying the game 4-4.

That set up Maggs' heroics in the ninth.  A chance to extend the lead further came to nothing when Frank Thomas's shot smacked high off the tall wall in left-center field for a double, and neither Aaron Rowand or Sandy Alomar could get him home.

Antonio Osuna was trusted to get the first out the ninth, but Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel wasn't taking any chances.  Damaso Marte was brought in for the final two outs to nail down the win for the Sox and collect his second save of the year.

Second-place in the pathetic A.L. Central remains safe for our Sox--at least for now.
