Effort doesn't translate into wins

CLEVELAND -- It would be so much easier to move on and count this White Sox team out if only Jose Valentin was waltzing into second base, if only Tony Graffanino was mailing in his swings and if only Minnesota hadn't folded last season.

But there are no signs the Twins are going to repeat last year's collapse and no signs that the Sox are giving up, even as they dropped 10 games back in the AL Central following their 7-1 loss to Cleveland on Monday night.

The problem is there isn't any indication from their first 94 games that the final 68 will be any different for the Sox, which is why manager Jerry Manuel is settling on the only thing left in his arsenal.

"You have to continue to have that blind faith that it's going to happen as long as there's time left on the schedule," Manuel said. "You've got to believe, you've got keep believing it can happen. That's all we as a staff can do."

The insistence within the organization that this team -- these 25 players -- are good enough to make the playoffs has only started to fade in the last few days.
