He's not afraid to mix it up (or tinker)

Fresh faces--and legs--worked won-ders for the White Sox on Sunday as manager Jerry Manuel tried to find a balance between getting guys rest and getting the team back on track.

Frank Thomas, on a 1-for-31 skid in his last nine games, was given the day off, as was Royce Clayton. Paul Konerko was moved to designated hitter, with Jeff Liefer getting a start at first base.

''You have to be careful, because you can get yourself further down by playing guys who are fatigued,'' Manuel said. ''I've always been a proponent of giving guys the time off when they need it, not necessarily when the schedule dictates.''

Carlos Lee's move to the No. 3 spot in the lineup might last longer than originally expected.
