Pre-Game Report

With nowhere to go but up, our White Sox managed to rebound a bit from hitting bottom in Saturday's doubleheader defeat at Detroit.  Jon Garland goes seven innings, Sox hitters crank out twelve hits, and mount a late-inning comeback (!) for a come from behind victory, 6-4 over the Tigers.  Sure it was only the hapless Tigers, but Sox Fans can't take anything for granted this season.

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel saw fit to let Carlos Lee stay in the #3 slot even as he made other changes throughout his lineup.  Who's surprised?  Slumping Frank Thomas was benched (Jeff Liefer starting at first base with Paul Konerko DHing), while slumping Jose Valentin got a rare start at shortstop, allowing Tony Graffanino to play at third.

Where does the Tinkerer come up with this stuff?  Sox Fans can be sure these benchings will only last as long as Thomas and Royce Clayton keep their mouths shut--which ought to be about 48 hours.  Even "long-term" changes last only a few days when the Tinkerer is making up the lineup card.

For the second consecutive day, Carlos Lee was a one-man wrecking crew.  His two dingers in the third and fifth innings spotted the Sox a two-run lead through the middle innings.  That's called "clutch hitting" for those Sox Fans out there that have forgotten the term.

Still the stomach acid began eating the insides of Sox Fans when Detroit rallied for three runs off Garland to take the lead 4-3.  How many times have we seen the Sox fold down the stretch when faced with these situations?

Surprise!  Our man El Caballo led off the eighth with a single, then advanced another base on a throwing error.  Magglio Ordonez reached on a single, and after Konerko struck out, Jose Valentin tripled home both runs, scoring himself on the second Detroit error of the inning.

God bless the Tigers.  Any other team would have shut us down.

Antonio Osuna made life as exciting as possible for Sox Fans in the ninth, giving up two screaming shots into Comerica Park's deep outfield, but each dropping for outs rather than hits or homers.

Whew!  While the Sox have hit bottom, at least they aren't tunneling.  On to Cleveland for their latest misadventures!

Carlos Lee

4 for 5, with two dingers, three runs scored.  El Caballo also had two 2-out rbi's.  What's he doing playing for us?
