Pre-Game Report

Can we all agree the Sox teams of recent years are positively horrible at the fundamentals of the game?  Lost amongst the ongoing debate over hitting, pitching, and defense, the Sox have consistently given up outs and run themselves out of innings with stupid baseball on the basepaths.  This game smelled from one end to another, Sox lose 2-1.

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel elected to juggle his lineup again to face a left-hander, the mighty Mark Redman.  Instead of going with his own hot hand, the Tinkerer lets the opposition dictate his own personnel decisions.  For his baseball acumen, the Tinkerer is rewarded with a six-hit performance using the guys Manuel specifically played to face Redman.

When will the Sox manager own up to his his own responsibility for his repeated failed attempts to tinker with his lineup?  He has admitted it usually doesn't work.  Why does he keep doing it?

Todd Ritchie spotted the Tigers two runs in the first inning.  The Sox would trail from one end to another.  Early rallies all came to naught because of poor fundamentals.  A leadoff double by Ray Durham came to nothing when he was thrown out at third base trying to advance on the infield grounder.  Yes, the ball was in front of him.

Carlos Lee started another rally in the second inning, leading off with a single, then advancing to third on a throwing error.  Neither Aaron Rowand, or Sandy Alomar can get the ball into the outfield, and Royce Clayton popped out.  Lee was stranded.  He was one of eight Sox baserunners walking off the diamond in this game.

Paul Konerko, God bless him, finally got the Sox on the board in the seventh with a solo dinger.  The Sox looked to start a real rally when Lee followed with a single.  Woo hoo!

Nope.  Lee was picked off first with the very next at-bat.  Two more baserunners were stranded in the eighth, and two more in the ninth.  The Sox had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with one out.  But Alomar can't get the ball out of the infield, and Valentin swung at a high fastball for strike three.  Game over.

Sloppy baseball, precisely what Sox Fans have come to expect from this outfit.

Paul Konerko

Hit a dinger.  Prevented the Sox from being shutout.  Took one for the team to start the ninth inning rally, too.
