Wright on: Sox work new style

DETROIT -- White Sox manager Jerry Manuel was frustrated, fed up and decided that he couldn't wait until the All-Star break to make a change in his pitching staff.

The change didn't involve any of the pitchers, however, but in the philosophy they will now bring to the mound with them, hopefully along with some nasty sliders and fastballs.

The Sox trailed 9-0 in the fourth inning Sunday when Manuel gave catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr. a new directive that was contrary to everything the staff had worked on since Spring Training.

"He just told me 'go out there and call everything away. I don't want to see any more mistakes inside,'" Alomar said.

In the final six innings of that 9-3 loss, the Sox only allowed two hits the rest of the way, and when Dan Wright took the ball Thursday, Manuel's order remained.

Stay away.

"It's like telling a hitter you've got to change your batting stance," Alomar said.

Well, it worked. So far.
