Pre-Game Report

Jose Valentin made comments that the Sox must stick together, avoid the negative stuff, and play near-perfect baseball to win.  It's anybody's guess what's going on inside the Sox clubhouse right now, but you can't argue with the results of this game.  For a team that played dead from the neck up entering the all-star break, the Sox looked a bit like the juggernaut that sawed through American League back in April.  Steve Sparks and the Detroit Tigers were the victims, 9-2.

Sox Fans, we need four more of these each week for the next three months.

It was the team we were promised last Spring taking the field for Jerry "the Tinkerer" Manuel.  No silly lineup experiments tonight.  Ken Lofton led off, collected two hits and batted in three.  Ray Durham batted #2 and sparkled at the plate and in the field, 4 for 5 and a fine double-play.  Even struggling Frank Thomas reappeared in the #3 slot, collecting his first hit since the Tinkerer benched him last week.  Nice to see him get a two-out rbi single.  If the big man pressed any harder, his butt would resemble a pancake.  Make that a very large pancake!

The Sox got a pair of gift runs in the first inning.  They added three more in the fourth, and three more over the next two innings, too.  Paul Konerko followed up on his should-have-been all-star MVP performance with a 2 for 4 night, one walk, two rbi's and a dinger.  Jose Valentin picked up a double, an rbi, and scored a run, too.

Hey, even the bottom of the order looked good!  Carlos Lee, Sandy Alomar, and Royce Clayton each had hits.  Sox Fans, who wudda thunk it?

The beneficiary of all this offense was in-over-his-head youngster Danny Wright.  Spotted a quick lead, Danny didn't spoil it, going eight innings, scattering four hits and limiting the anemic Tigers to two runs.  He picks up his sixth win of the season and takes a chip out of his fat ERA, now down to 5.47.

Keith Foulke allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but gets the next two hitters to nail down the win for Wright.  As usual, there is no save opportunity with our feast or famine Sox.

Let's get over .500 and see what happens.
