Pre-Game Report

As sure as night follows day, Jerry "The Tinkerer Manuel has another new lineup for Sox Fans to scratch their heads over.  You can be sure his players long ago gave up trying to figure it out, too.  They just show up for work and read the  line up to find out their assignment for a each  new day's wages.  It's been like this for two months straight.

For a change, this lineup worked. Ray Durham returned to the leadoff spot while Ken Lofton took the day off, joined by the slumping Frank Thomas on the bench.  Presumably the Big Hurt is dialing long distance for Walt Hrniak's help fixing his swing.  We can't blame his hitting trouble on his ex-wife anymore.

Nine innings later--miracles!--the Sox had themselves a win.  Mark Buehrle holds the anemic Indians to two runs through seven innings and the Sox win 7-3.

It's been a long time since Durham was teamed up with Jose Valentin at the top of the order.  Manuel must have found an old scorecard from 2000 amongst the clutter in the top-drawer of his desk.  You know, lost between some old baseball cards, an autographed picture of Felipe Alou, and an unused can of shaving cream.

The duo reached base 3 of 7 plate appearances (including a Durham dinger), so you have to count it a minor success.  Unlike most other changes Manuel makes, this one has a chance of being used tomorrow, too.  As for after the all-star break, don't bet on it.  The man is far too itchy to stick with any formula more than two consecutive days.

Buehrle was his usual brilliant self.  He struck out six while walking just one, scattering eight hits.  Still the game was tied 2-2 when Jeff Liefer came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.  It's just these sort of at-bats that the Sox have failed miserably in all season long.  Would the lefty corner bench infielder who can't pinch hit come through?

Against Tribe pitching slug Jason Phillips, the answer is a resounding, YES!

Liefer's clout staked the Sox to a 5-2 lead.  That was enough for Buehrle, who got help from Antonio Osuna and Damaso Marte to nail down the win.

One game to go before the all-star break, and then we get to find out how much more baseball the millionaires and billionaires will play before their bickering over money shuts the game down again.
