Not all about the numbers

The lump that may or may not turn the tide for the White Sox has finally receded on the left side of Paul Konerko's head.

There were no skull fractures, no X-rays, no lapses into semi-consciousness after Konerko ducked into a Kerry Wood curveball last Friday at Comiskey Park.

It was just another hit by pitch that happened to precede two Konerko home runs, the last of which gave his team a 10-8 lead, completing a stunning comeback from eight runs down before a standing-room-only crowd.

It was one small lump for Konerko, but will it be remembered as a pivotal game for a puzzling Sox team?

"That was a great game," Konerko said. "Hopefully we'll be able to look back and say that was the one that turned us around."

It's happened before. On June 4, 1972, when Dick Allen's three-run, pinch-hit home run off Sparky Lyle gave the Sox a doubleheader sweep over the Yankees as a long Sunday afternoon faded into the night. That '72 team battled the mighty A's into September before the talent gap showed through. They finished 87-67, 5 games behind Oakland.

Konerko may have carved out a similar space in Sox history, albeit with a still suspect team.
