Sox light up fireworks, Tigers

Jerry Manuel wondered if his players could muster as much enthusiasm to play the Detroit Tigers as they had displayed against the Cubs last weekend.

The answer came with six homers, second most in franchise history, and a season-high 17 runs as the White Sox pummeled the team with the worst record in baseball 17-9 Tuesday night at Comiskey Park.

It was by no means aesthetically pleasing, as Sox pitchers yielded six homers themselves, including three by reliever Bob Howry in the ninth. The combined 12 home runs, on a 93-degree night with a 14 m.p.h. breeze blowing out, tied a major-league record set by the same two teams on May 28, 1995, at Tiger Stadium.

But the way Sox starter Todd Ritchie gave his team a chance to win and gave Manuel reason for optimism. Ritchie (5-10), who had not won since beating the New York Mets on June 11, went seven innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out five.

The Sox supported Ritchie with two homers each by Magglio Ordonez and Sandy Alomar Jr. Ordonez blasted a grand slam in the eighth inning, the sixth of his career and his second this season.
