Alomar Jr. homers twice in return

CHICAGO - With no contract in place for next year and a worrisome shoulder to go with two surgically-repaired knees, time is an enemy of 36-year-old catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr.

But Alomar, who celebrated his 36th birthday on June 18 while on the disabled list for the 10th time in his career, knows how to use the remaining time he has left wisely.

An impingement in his throwing shoulder put Alomar on the DL and needed to heal before he could rejoin the Sox. That didn't stop him from traveling with the team during their recent road trip to Philadelphia, Atlanta and Minnesota.

He hit the batting cages on a daily basis, trying to figure out how to improve on his .284 batting average and working his shoulder into shape. A rehab assignment to Triple-A Charlotte only lasted three games, but combined with all his extra work it appears to have been more than enough.

Alomar came off the DL Tuesday and went 4-for-5 with two home runs in the White Sox' 17-9 win over the Detroit Tigers. It was only the third multi-homer game of his career and first in nearly seven seasons.
