Friday's overlooked hero: Matt Ginter

It was easy to overlook Matt Ginter at Comiskey Park on Friday, especially because of Paul Konerko's two home runs and the White Sox's stirring rally from an 8-0 deficit to a 13-9 victory over the Cubs.

But team ace Mark Buehrle didn't overlook his 24-year-old teammate. As winning pitcher Ginter was being interviewed on a postgame TV show, Buehrle sneaked up behind him and rewarded him by shoving a shaving-cream pie into Ginter's face.

"All in good fun," Ginter said. "Mark's time will come. He better grow some eyes in the back of his head."

Recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Charlotte for the second time this season, Ginter was by far the most effective of 13 pitchers who worked Friday's 22-run, 23-hit, 18-walk slugfest.

Ginter shut out the Cubs without a hit for the 31/3 innings he pitched from the time he replaced ineffective starter Dan Wright with two outs in the third inning until he successively struck out Delino DeShields and Sammy Sosa to finish the sixth.

The Sox trailed 8-0 when Ginter entered the game. They led 10-8 when he left, making him the winning pitcher after scoring six runs in the sixth before 46,027 fans, the largest regular-season crowd in park history.
