Ordonez doubts All-Star chances

Magglio Ordonez and Sammy Sosa may get together around the batting cage before Friday's White Sox-Cubs game at Comiskey Park.

But they won't be discussing which of them is the best right fielder in Chicago.

"We don't talk about baseball," Ordonez said.

Ordonez is flattered by the comparisons, but doesn't feel they are valid because Sosa has so much more experience.

"We're two different players," Ordonez said. "It doesn't really bother me what people say. I know some fans pay attention to that stuff, but I don't really care about it. All I know is Sammy is one of the best players in the game right now and is going to be a Hall of Famer."

Ordonez will find out Sunday whether he makes the American League All-Star team as a reserve outfielder for the fourth straight year. Yankees manager Joe Torre made him the only Sox representative last year, and Ordonez is again near the top, statistically, among American League outfielders this year.

Ordonez began Thursday's action tied for second among AL outfielders in RBIs (55), while ranking fourth in batting average (.313), fourth in runs scored (54), third in doubles (24), third in total bases (153), third in extra-base hits (38) and third in slugging percentage (.544).

But the Sox's mediocre season would seem to preclude them from having more than two representatives. Paul Konerko leads the AL in RBIs, while Mark Buehrle is tied for the league lead in victories. Does Ordonez think he has a chance?

"It's not going to be easy," he said. "I don't think I have big numbers. Konerko and Buehrle have really good numbers and they've been consistent all year. You never know. If I go, fine. If not, that's fine too."
