Bonds/Kent? Pfft.. We had Thomas/Ventura

The Barry Bonds-Jeff Kent shoving match in San Francisco rekindled memories of a similar incident in the White Sox dugout six years ago at Yankee Stadium.

On Aug. 8, 1996, Frank Thomas went after teammate Robin Ventura in the seventh inning after Ventura tried to keep him from getting ejected for arguing with umpire Mike Reilly after he had struck out.

WGN-TV cameras caught Thomas shoving Ventura in the chest before teammates, including Dave Martinez and Lyle Mouton, broke it up. Like Bonds, Thomas declined to talk after the incident afterward. But Martinez told reporters that day: "[Ventura] was just speaking honestly in the dugout and [Thomas] snapped. When a guy 275 pounds snaps, look out."

Before Wednesday's game in the Metrodome, Thomas said the two incidents were not alike.

"We were all hot about the umpiring that day," he said. "Robin was trying to keep me in the game."
