Tempers flare, Sox lose

It didn't take long for the White Sox-Twins series to get ugly.

Torii Hunter had to be restrained from going at Bob Howry after being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning.

Then, after order was restored, the Twins held off a late Sox rally to post a 6-5 victory at the Metrodome.

Twins reliever Eddie Guardado walked the bases loaded after getting the first two outs in the ninth, then served up a single to left to Frank Thomas to bring home Royce Clayton and make it a one-run game. Kenny Lofton was racing around third before third-base coach Wallace Johnson held him up.

"With this turf [sending Lofton] would've been a tough call," manager Jerry Manuel said, defending the decision.

Magglio Ordonez then popped out to short on a 2-2 pitch to give Guardado his league-leading 23rd save.
