White Sox fall short in the ninth

MINNEAPOLIS - As the ball Frank Thomas smoked was sailing over Kenny Lofton's head and into left field, Lofton didn't waste any time trying to spot where it was going, he just put on the burners and took off.

The first thing he expected to see since he was coming from second base was third-base coach Wallace Johnson. The last thing he expected to see was Johnson holding up his hands and yelling at him to stay at third base.

"It was hit hard and I didn't know right at first what was going on," Lofton said. "I was wondering why he held me."

When Lofton gathered himself and caught his breath he saw what the rest of the crowd of 28,340 had seen.

Thomas' ball had been hit right at Minnesota left fielder Jacque Jones, who fielded the ball on one hop and was able to make a perfect throw to Twins catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
