Pre-Game Report

JERRY'S HEAD

Yeah, the Sox were caught looking ahead to their big showdown series with first-place Minnesota, right Sox Fans?  If you believe that, you must believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and Sammy Sosa's Flintstone vitamins, too.  An outrageously embarrassing loss to Atlanta, 15-2.

Thank God the Sox hit into a double-play to end it in the ninth.  Sox Fans were afraid they might extend this three-hour nightmare further.

What was more irritating?  Having to watch the Sox completely suck in this game, or having to listen to Rooney, Farmer, Hawk, and D.J. make excuses for them?  If the truth is the first casualty of war, it must be the first casualty of blowout defeats, too.  We won't pull any punches with you in this space.  Good luck finding that at the team's official site.

Whatever the first 3.5 innings innings of this game constituted, can we agree "a pitchers' duel" requires a bit more than three innings work?  Hawk was working on his personal job security with that comment.  The game an entire blowout, Rooney asks Farmer if Braves reliever Albie Lopez can hold a 13 run lead.  Farmer dutifully replies he's not sure.  Sox Fans can only be sure Ed Farmer won't run out of inane stories from his playing days in the 70's and 80's before this season is over.

How much do the Sox miss Jim Parque?  It's only because Parque turned out to be such a bust that Gary Glover is getting turns in the rotation.  Of course a serious pennant contender wouldn't have plugged the hole by rushing a rookie like Jon Rauch into the rotation, or gone the cheap route by promoting Glover from the bullpen when Rauch inevitably failed.  But honestly, who among us thinks the Sox are serious about contending for a pennant?

Whoops, my mistake.  It's OUR fault the Sox suck.  Never mind.

With Parque and so many others coming back from shoulder surgery, it could be argued it was nothing but a pipedream the Sox believed they could get all these guys back healthy in 2002.  Another of the sore shoulder brigade, Rocky Biddle, was the other victim in this game.

With Glover and Biddle serving it up, the Braves sent ten hitters to the plate in the fourth inning.  They scored seven runs on five hits, plus one walk.  Tony Graffanino's error is doubtlessly what many Sox Fans will point to as the source of the team's failure.  Whatever...

Not that it's important, but here is the list of all the Sox ballplayers who failed to hit safely in this game:  Ray Durham, Tony Graffanino, Carlos Lee, Aaron Rowand, Royce Clayton, Willie Harris, Jeff Liefer, and Mark Johnson.  Combined they went 0 for 18.  Their teammates split four hits between them.  Pathetic.

This team can't win without offense--especially with guys like Gary Glover in the rotation.  Deal with it.

Hit two dingers.  His two hits were one-half of the Sox' offensive output.  Not that offense is as important as pitching and defense, of course.
