Little things matter to White Sox

PHILADELPHIA -- Even if a category could be created to recognize the unsung plays in baseball, it would always be overshadowed by home runs and victories, the former being the most glamorous stat and the latter, of course, being the most important.

To give proper credit to Paul Konerko and Mark Buehrle for their roles in the White Sox's 6-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday afternoon, one has to look beyond Konerko's three-run homer and Buehrle's 8 1/3 innings of six-hit ball, which produced his 10th win of the season.

The burgeoning stars each made small, almost invisible plays in the seventh inning that were lost in the glare of their larger contributions.

Konerko came to the plate with Magglio Ordonez having hit a leadoff double and Chicago ahead 4-0, a nice lead with Buehrle on the mound but nice leads have been known to disappear on the Sox in recent weeks.

Having regained the American League RBI lead, with 60, with his first-inning homer, Konerko could have played the big shot and swung away. Instead, he fought off several pitches and pushed a grounder to second, which allowed Ordonez to take third. He then scored on a Carlos Lee single to put the Sox up 5-0.
