For those of you Sox Fans with short memories, What word describes when your team scores early, the pitching staff holds the opposition hitters in check, and everyone walks off the field with big smiles on their face?

A win, of course.  That's what the Sox did Thursday at Philadelphia, 6-1 over the Phillies to win the rubber game of the series.

For advanced users only:  next we'll discuss "a save opportunity".

As often happens, staff ace Mark Buehrle was more than up to the task of shutting down the opposition.  As often happens nearly as much, the Sox offense is there to give Buehrle more than enough support to make him the winner.  Paul Konerko was Buehrle's hitting buddy in this one, stroking a three-run dinger into left field bullpen.  He spotted Buehrle a 3 run lead before Mark's first pitch.  It was lights out for the Phils from that point on.

The Sox added runs in the second, seventh, and ninth.  Besides Konerko, Magglio Ordonez also showed life at the plate, 3 for 5 and a dinger.

Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel saw fit to field a team and lineup that makes plausible sense--and SURPRISE!--it delivers quite well.  The bottom of the order (besides the pitcher) was Carlos Lee, Jose Valentin, and Mark Johnson.  For leaving well-enough alone, the Tinkerer was rewarded with a collective 3 for 11 with a walk from those three players.  Here's betting he won't use this combination again for another three weeks.

Buehrle was magnificent.  He went 8.1 innings, scattering six hits, striking out five and walking two.  When one of the Phillies slugs had the temerity to argue a strikeout, excitable Larry Bowa popped from the dugout and made an ass of himself, taking up the cause with the umpire.  Whether this charade actually motivates his team is anybody's guess.  At some point we can reasonably assume his ballplayers will be laughing at Bowa as much as the umpires already are.

On to Atlanta and more National League baseball and all that great strategy from executing the double-switch.  Yeah, like our manager needs another excuse for shaking his lineup!
