Pre-Game Report

Inside
JERRY'S HEAD

The most remarkable thing happened Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field:  fans were watching the game.  People turned off their cell phones, turned to face the action on the field, while largely ignoring the hijinks in the bleachers.  Naturally a good portion of the fans in attendance were Sox Fans, so the usual Wrigley moronic fan factor was significantly reduced.

Did the men stop peeing in the sinks?  Your WSI correspondent isn't saying.

Less surprising was the play of our Sox.  Once again the offense slumbered and this time the pitching wasn't nearly up to the task of keeping the score low.  The Sox bite the big one, 8-4 losers to the team that practically redefined the term.

Jon Garland salted this one away for the Baby Bears early.  He allowed five runs to the Flubs the first three innings.  He let the leadoff man on base for all three.  Even Todd Hundley was getting hits!  TODD HUNDLEY!!!

A 5-0 deficit for our Sox might as well be 500-0 for the way the offense has responded the past month.  Jerry Manuel fielded a team with DH Frank Thomas on the bench, so National League fans can fool themselves into thinking there is strategy in pinch hitting for the pitcher.

Jerry the Tinkerer's latest secret weapon, the 1-2 punch of Ken Lofton and Tony Graffanino, fell flat on its face.  Lofton was 0-fer with a walk, while Tony G. was a giant nothing with a K.  So much for setting the table for the watered-down heart of the order.

The only offense of note came from Paul Konerko.  The Sox were fortunate enough to have Magglio Ordonez batting in front of him.  Thus the two dingers Konehead mashed were both of the two-run variety, Maggs crossing the plate ahead of Walnuts.  Konerko and Ordonez accounted for five of the Sox' seven hits in this game.

Believe it or not, the Sox actually had a shot to win this game.  Konerko's second dinger in the eighth cut the Flubbies' lead to 6-4.  With another inning to go, and playing the Lovable Losers, a Sox Fan has got to like those odds!

Not a chance.  Relievers Bob Howry and Damaso Marte teamed up to give the Baby Bears those two runs right back.  Yeah, Carlos Lee was charged with an error that led to an unearned run, but so what?  The Flubbies gave up three and it didn't make a bit of difference in their winning the game.

A leadoff single in the ninth by Ray Durham came to nothing.  The urine stench throughout the Wrigley Field concourse was nearly masked by the Cubune Company's multiple application of Pine Sol disinfectant and the other foul odor wafting from inside the Sox clubhouse.

Makes you sick, eh Sox Fans?

Paul Konerko

3 for 4 with 3 rbi's, two dingers, and two runs scored.  He accounted for virtually all of the Sox offense by himself.
