Pre-Game Report

Inside
JERRY'S HEAD

The only thing that made Monday night's game unique amongst all the pathetic showings of late by our White Sox were the delays.  Everything else went exactly by the script.  Sox Fans know the script--and we're a bit tired of it.  Sox lose 3-1 to the Mets.

Once upon a time, a game like this would likely be rained out.  Heavy thunderstorms and rain showers rolled into Chicago throughout the evening.  But Lord knows nobody in baseball wants to give up the gate receipts for a home date--especially when most everyone holding a rain check only paid half-price.  Two hours of rain delays and a power outage couldn't prevent this one from being played.  Too bad.

If it seems bleak, just remember:  this is the team we can afford.  Without the gate receipts from Monday's game, how much worse would we be?  This is after all your fault, Sox Fans. Kenny Williams can't do one more thing.  Remember?

The Sox got six hits.  Six!!!  How did they even manage this much?  Nine innings of baseball can swallow up six hits fairly easily, and the Sox never managed to string together more than two hits in one inning all night long.  The offense is dead, dead, dead.

Paul Konerko managed a solo dinger in the seventh inning.  With his chances of getting selected to the all-star game fading fast, he probably hardly cares whether the news reaches Joe Torre reading the papers back in New York.  That's not how he felt two weeks ago--and he admitted as much.  It's funny how far our expectations have fallen in the time since then.  On second thought, it's not funny at all!

Gary Glover pitched exactly as we come to expect Gary Glover to pitch--unsuccessfully.  He needed to be bailed out of the fifth inning again, never able to get the third out.  For his 4.2 innings, he gave up three runs, seven hits, and two dingers before Manuel woke up, bolted for the mound, and grabbed what Kenny Williams describes as a #5 pitcher on a contending team.  Nobody is buying it anymore.

The bullpen stopped the hemorrhaging.  Kelly Wunsch got Glover out of the fifth without further damage, then Rocky Biddle, Damaso Marte, and Bob Howry went in order to hold New York scoreless the remainder of the way.

A real contender would have plenty of time to mount a comeback.  But this is the Sox, and they haven't mounted a comeback all season.

With inter-league games filling most of June, the Sox "O" will face more unknown pitchers in the days ahead.  Be afraid, Sox Fans.  Be very afraid.

Bullpen

Picked up the wreckage by pitching 4.1 innings of shutout baseball.  Allowed just two hits while striking out 4 and walking 1.  Wunsch, Biddle, Marte, and Howry all wasted in a losing effort.
