White Sox draft is family affair

CHICAGO -- Manager Jerry Manuel usually doesn't pay any attention to whom the White Sox select in the First-Year Player draft. This year, he made a slight exception.

"I haven't heard anything about any of the draft picks," Manuel said. "Except Anthony Manuel."

The elder Manuel's 19-year-old son, an infielder at Kishwaukee Community College, was selected in the 48th round and was one of 50 players the Sox drafted over the two-day selection process, which concluded Wednesday.

After taking 14 pitchers on Tuesday, the Sox drafted pitchers with 12 of their first 19 picks on Wednesday, at one point taking six pitchers in a row, including four straight left-handers.

While the Sox ended up taking 29 pitchers, only three of their picks were used on outfielders. The Sox continue to use the draft to stock up on pitching and rely on their successful scouting in Latin countries for position players.

"I think we've proven it here with Carlos (Lee) and Magglio (Ordonez)," White Sox Senior Director of Player Personnel Duane Shaffer said.
