Sox still focused on adding arms

Trying to predict just which player the White Sox will select in the first round has been difficult for many years, mainly because the Sox are the only Major League team not to have a pick in the top ten since 1990.

On the other hand, guessing which position they'll go for is a whole lot easier.

"I think you don't want to go against a trend that's successful," said, Duane Shaffer, White Sox senior director of player personnel. "So I think we're probably going to stick with the success that we've had. What we've done here is build up our pitching, we've build it up quite a bit."

The 1999 draft class already has provided a bounty. Jon Rauch, Dan Wright and Matt Ginter have made it to the Majors, and several others -- Rob Purvis, Corwin Malone, Dennis Ulacia and Joe Valentine -- are not far behind.

The success of that draft enabled the Sox to veer a bit and use their top pick in 2000 on outfielder Joe Borchard, considered to be one of the best hitting prospects in baseball.

Besides Borchard, the only time the Sox didn't take a pitcher with their top pick in the last six drafts was when shortstop Jason Dellaero was selected. Ironically, Dellaero is now being converted to a pitcher
