Orioles drop 7th inning bomb on Sox...

April 29 at Baltimore

Toon Squad Update:
The Joker
Sox thought they were getting a wild card ended up going bust.

Short Take:   Sloppy play in the field, running into outs at home, a starter left in a few pitches to long. It was just one of those nights...

The Sox and Sox fans alike were hoping to erase the bad taste John Danks and the bullpen left in our collective mouths last night. With Carlos Rodon on the mound and an offense that has been coming around there was reason to be hopeful. For the first seven 6.5 innings that was exactly what happened. The Sox weren't winning but they weren't losing either despite some questionable decisions and shoddy fielding. Unfortunately games are 9 innings long and the Orioles hammered out a 3-run jack in the bottom of the 7th and the Sox went on to lose 6-3.

Carlos Rodon took the mound for the Sox tonight and early on he was more than adequate. He held the Orioles in check for the first four innings, retiring the first eleven men he faced before giving up a single with two outs in the 4th. He then retired the final batter and at this point in time the Sox led 1-0. After yielding a leadoff walk in the 5th Rodon induced a ground ball which Brett Lawrie proceeded to boot and that left runners at first and third with no one out. Rodon got Hardy to hit a sharp grounder to Frazier who caught Adam Jones in a rundown for the first out and still managed to hold the other two runners at first and second. Unfortunately Reynolds then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Shoop followed with a single to center to give the Orioles the lead. Rodon induced a double play grounder but a hard slide at second caused Jimmy Rollins to airmail the turn throw into the dugout which scored the third run and left a man at second with two away. Machado then singled but Adam Eaton made a nice charge and a great throw and was able to nab the runner at the plate for the third out. When the dust had cleared the Orioles had managed to score three runs with two of them unearned and had two men thrown out at the plate all in the same inning. Just when you think you've seen it all.

Now in years past that 3-run kick to the gut might have been the end of our Sox, but not this year and they fought back to plate runs in the 6th and 7th. The 6th might have actually been a bigger inning but with the bases loaded, one run in and one away, Melky Cabrera looped a soft liner to center. Adam Jones charged, grabbed it shoulder high and then fired a strike to the plate to double up Rollins and end the threat. Lawrie then partially made up for his earlier gaff by tying the game with a solo shot to left in the 7th. Alas, that was the last run the Sox scored. They managed but a single baserunner the rest of the way and when the Orioles led off the 7th by going single, single BOMB! the game was basically over.

So not the type of performance we've come to expect from our boys in silver and black, but at least they retain a 2.5 game lead over the slumping Royals as I type these words. There are some things to be hopeful for as Abreu looks to be getting back on track with the bat and the team continues to look much more cohesive and professional than in years past. With David Robertson on bereavement leave the Sox have to be a bit careful with their bullpen the next few days. Hopefully Latos can go 6+ tomorrow and give the Sox a chance to win as he has in every start so far. Game time is at 6:05 in Chicago. Hopefully the bats break out and give the pitchers a break.

WSI's
That's all folks:
Get this roadshow back on track tomorrow hopefully...
