Snakes Bite Covey

May 23rd, 2017 at Arizona Diamondbacks

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Why did it have to be snakes?

Short Take:  Covey gets rocked early as Snakes edge Sox 5-4 in the desert.

The Sox locked horns with the Diamondbacks for game 9 of this long 10 game road trip. A matchup in the 100 degree heat of the Arizona desert with the HR susceptible Dylan Covey on the mound didn't exactly fill me to the brim with confidence. That lack of confidence proved justified as the Snakes edged the Sox 5-4 with most of the damage done against Covey.

The Diamondbacks predictably went right to work on Dylan Covey in the Top of the 1st. MVP threat Paul Goldschmidt launched an RBI triple into the corner and Jake Lamb followed that up with a long 2 run HR that almost landed in the swimming pool making it 3-0 bad guys. Dylan managed to get a DP to end the inning but it's never a good sign to fall behind by a crooked number in the 1st inning with that much loud contact. Melky answered back launching a solo HR in the Top of the 2nd to deep LF cutting their lead to 3-1. However, Covey would give that run right back in the bottom of the 2nd with yet another tater given up, this time to Chris Herrmann. The Toddfather put us right back in the game in the Top of the 3rd as he launched a 2 run blast to RF making it 4-3. If you are noticing a pattern here, I would be remiss if I didn't mention just how much of a launching pad this ballpark is, especially during high temps. The ball goes up in that light Arizona hot air and just doesn't come down.

Dylan Covey had to be removed from this game in the 3rd with an apparent oblique injury which was probably a blessing considering how well the Snakes were barreling him up. The Sox looked to be poised to tie the game in the top of the 4th and take back control but some serious frustration awaited. After the first two runners got on with nobody out, Renteria called for an ill-advised sac bunt with catcher Kevan Smith. It ended in a foul bunt strike three which was entirely predictable. Matt Davidson followed it up with a 6-4-3 DP ball and that immediately ended the threat. There were so many things wrong with this bunt call. Allow me to run through the lengthy list: Kevan Smith is a power oriented catcher, you are playing for the tie on the road, you are playing for a tie too early in the game, you are setting the table for the 9th spot in the order, you are bunting on the hard desert playing surface, you are bunting when the previous hitter walked, and you are bunting on a scorching hot day when the ball is absolutely FLYING out of the yard. Other than that, it was a GREAT idea to bunt. I like Ricky Renteria, I really do. He has this team playing hard, manages the bullpen well too...but please...stop bunting.

Arizona would tack on another run in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI double from Drury making it 5-3. The Sox bullpen would do admirable work keeping the team in the game and holding the Dbacks to 5 runs which allowed Jose Abreu to creep closer with a solo rainbow HR to LF that didn't come down. The Pito blast made it 5-4 and momentum was tipping towards the South Siders. The Sox weren't finished with Dbacks reliever DeRosa as they would manage to load the bases with 1 out for their best chance to tie it up. Unfortunately, Dbacks reliever JJ Hoover tossed sneaky 94 mph heat right past both the pinch hitting Narvaez as well as Yolmer Sanchez. Hoover's heroics stranded the bases loaded and that ended up being the last hurrah for the good guys in black. Fernando Rodney shut the door for the save in the 9th and that was your ballgame.

After eight starts, we've established that Dylan Covey doesn't appear to be MLB material. The injury in the 3rd inning might expedite his inevitable departure from the Sox rotation. Even rebuilding clubs can't carry a starting pitcher that has an E.R.A. of 7.64 and only goes 3 or 4 innings per outing. The short handed Sox bullpen continues to put in tremendous work though and gave the team a fighting chance in this game. Alas, it was not quite enough for the Pale Hose. The Sox look to salvage one in the desert tomorrow afternoon as Jose Quintana takes on Randall Delgado in the finale of this long 10 game road trip.

Game Notes-

-Avi Garcia was a late scratch in this game with flu like symptoms. He did pinch hit in the 8th and was intentionally walked.

-Covey's line before getting yanked was 2 IP, 4ER, 2HR allowed, 0BB, 1K.

-Yolmer Sanchez played RF for a few innings as part of a double switch.

-The Sox bullpen of Beck, Infante, Holmberg, and Kahnle covered 5.2 innings and yielded only 1 ER. Tremendous work.

WSI's
Fandamonium:
Less sac bunting and less Dylan Covey starts please. Thanks.
