Sad Ending To A Sad Season

October 4 vs Detroit Tigers

Sox Project Update:
Postponed Until Further Notice
More assets needed to fix this mess

Short Take:   Timely hitting goes to sleep

The last day of the 2015 White Sox season summed it up in typical fashion. There was some decent pitching from the starter, some good and some bad pitching from the bullpen, and very little offense from the Sox position players. This was the recipe for another disappointing loss to the Detroit Tigers by a 6-0 score.

Frankie Montas got his second start of the season, and put in a creditable performance. Though he ran up his pitch count with too many pitches out of the strike zone, the Tigers managed only one run off the rookie. Detroit center fielder Anthony Gose hit an 0-2 pitch to center for a leadoff single. With two out, Montas walked Tyler Collins and gave up a run scoring double to Nick Castellanos. After another walk, Montas struck out Tiger first baseman Jefry Marte and trailed by only one.

The Detroit starter today was Daniel Norris. The lefty had no trouble with the Sox lineup, as the first Sox hit was not registered until the 4th inning. Trayce Thompson tripled to center with one out, and a rattled Norris walked Avi Garcia on four pitches. But the always impatient Alexei Ramirez swung at the first Norris offering, a changeup, and grounded into a double play. With the Sox scoring threat snuffed, Norris cruised through five shutout innings.

Zach Putnam relieved Montas in the 5th, and had a mirror image of the Sox 4th. With one out, Gose tripled to center. Putnam walked the following batter Dixon Machado. Then, J.D. Martinez showed some patience and showed the Sox how offense is done. On a 1-2 pitch he lifted a fly ball deep enough to left to score the second Tiger run.

The second Sox hit came in the 6th off the bat of Tyler Saladino. And again, no Sox timely hit was forthcoming. Saladino was stranded at third, the last Sox runner in scoring position.

In the 7th inning, Dan Webb and his miserable lack of control came in to put the game out of reach. A harmless leadoff single by Bryan Holaday was followed by a fly out and a ground out, and Webb had the chance to keep the game close. But then he walked Machado and J.D. Martinez to load the bases. Webb then threw a low pitch to left handed batter Tyler Collins, who tripled to center and unloaded the bases. The Sox trailed 5-0.

Journeyman Scott Carroll pitched the 8th inning and stretched the Tiger lead out further. After a one out walk, Holaday and Josh Wilson hit singles. Wilson's RBI plated the final run in U.S. Cellular field for 2015.

So this is the way the White Sox 2015 season ends, not with a bang but a whimper. General Manager Rick Hahn will have his hands full in the off-season, both with a new rebuilding plan and with angry fans at Soxfest. As fall fades to winter, it's hard to have much hope for 2016. In the next few months, we will see if the White Sox front office can turn dispair into excitement.

Rebuilding Recap:
  Wait until next year.
