Seattle Shut Down

August 28 vs Seattle Mariners

Toon Squad Update:

Short Take: Mariner misery from miserly Rodon.

Carlos Rodon has been in shut-down mode in the month of August, 2016. He's pitched at least six innings in every one of his August games, and has not surrendered more than two runs in any of them. Rodon's mastery continued today as the Sox defeated the Mariners by a 4-1 score.

Rodon had to deal with a threat early. Kyle Seager hit a one-out triple in the top of the 2nd inning. But Carlos struck out the following two Mariners and preserved his shut out.

Seattle pitcher Taijuan Walker was perfect through the first three innings. He got himself into trouble in the 4th by hitting leadoff batter Adam Eaton on the first pitch. With one out, Melky Cabrera blooped a double down the third base line and Eaton coasted into third. Walker's control deserted him again as he plunked Jose Abreu with a pitch to load the bases. DH Justin Morneau hit away from the shift by smashing a single through the shortstop hole, scoring Eaton and Cabrera. The Sox led 2-0.

Rodon kept his scorecard clean until two out in the top of the 6th. Seattle slugger Robinson Cano hit a 0-1 pitch into the right field stands to cut the Sox lead in half, 2-1. Carlos retired the final batter of the 6th, but got into trouble in the 7th. Seager and Franklin Gutierrez hit back-to-back singles to finish Rodon's day. Chris Beck came in to face Seattle catcher Mike Zunino. Zunino got a bunt down but too fast to Sox third baseman Todd Frazier. Frazier threw to second for the force-out, keeping the double play intact. When lefty slugger Adam Lind came in to pinch hit, Sox manager Robin Ventura countered with southpaw Dan Jennings. Jennings only pitch of the day was hit on two hops to Tyler Saladino, who fired to Tim Anderson who relayed to Abreu. The threat was snuffed on a 4-6-3 double play.

Mariners manager Scott Servais let Walker start the 8th inning to have a shot at winning the game. This choice backfired as the Sox scored two big insurance runs. Tim Anderson hit a one-out single and stole second. Melky followed with a triple to the National Car Rental sign in right center; then Abreu hit a sacrifice fly to short right. The Sox were up 4-1 with three outs to go.

But it wouldn't be a David Robertson save without some drama. Cano and Seager hit a couple of soft singles, with a Nelson Cruz out recorded in between. Robertson struck out Gutierrez. Then Zunino hit a grounder to third that Frazier fielded and simply stepped on the bag to finish the White Sox winner.

The Sox head to Detroit for a Monday 6:10 pm game against the Tigers. James Shields goes up against Matt Boyd. The broadcast is on WPWR My50 Chicago.
