Pre-Game Report

Can't win 'em all, eh Sox Fans?  Unless of course, you're a Cubs fan.  Then you believe your team may go the remainder of the season without another loss.  Take a long drink of Kubbie Kool-Aid and even Mark Prior is good for another 15 wins.

The offense once again sputtered, Todd Ritchie melted, and the Sox let Detroit escape town with a victory.  The final was 9-2, another blowout game for our Sox.  This time we're on the short end.

The Sox simply can't win on Sundays, and they can't ever seem to come from behind after the sixth inning either.  The two lousy runs the Sox managed both came in the fourth inning.  Paul Konerko singled home Ray Durham, and Jose Valentin sacrificed home Magglio Ordonez.  Pretty depressing.

Say what you will about "hard luck" pitchers like Todd Ritchie.  What they all have in common is losing a lot of baseball games.  Today's was no exception for last winter's big pitching acquisition from Pittsburgh.  Hit in the head with a baseball in the first inning, Ritchie never got out of an inning without Detroit scoring first.  He was pulled in the fourth inning, charged with six runs, all earned, and ten hits.  His record is now 3-6, and you wonder how much worse could Kip Wells have possibly done.

Don't answer that question!

The bullpen looked sharp until the ninth when Antonio Osuna got tagged for three earned runs, allowing two hits and two walks.  He probably figured there was no good reason for giving Detroit his best stuff.  Clearly the Sox weren't going to mount a comeback.  They haven't in over month.

The Sox went down in order in the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.  Jerry Manuel never went to his bench even one time.  At the bottom of the order, where guys are paid not to embarrass themselves too much, the 7-8-9 hitters were a combined 0 for 9 with one strikeout.  Time must be running short for Carlos Lee in a Sox uniform.  Can anybody imagine a good reason why overpaid free agents Sandy Alomar or Royce Clayton would be offered contracts for 2003?

Don't answer that question, either!

Amongst the guys paid to hit, Kenny Lofton was 0 for 4 and Frank Thomas was 0 for 3.

The league champions are coming to town Monday, and it's a half-price game.  Maybe Sundays ought to be half-price, too.
