Sock'em Sox!

(September 21, 2000)

Short Take:  Make way for the champs to be!

In front of 6,700 close friends and relatives inside Minnesota's Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, the Chicago White Sox began their final sprint to finishing this glorious marathon of a season.  Another convincing 9-4 victory cuts the team's magic number to 4 and starts the champagne to chillin'.  We're this close to making 2000 the most glorious Sox season in 41 years Sox fans.  (You can't see this but my index finger and thumb are 1 inch apart).

This could be the greatest party ever!

Is there any denying the special nature of this team?  Sure we have problems but all our championship rivals have them too.  The record shows the Sox have played their best baseball against the best teams in the league, especially in big games with big crowds.  If we've had any trouble at all, it's been with the riff raff bottom-dwellers of the A.L.

That's why we LOVE this latest victory.  The Twins suck, are going nowhere but home this October, play in front of small crowds in a dumpy stadium, and have given our Sox fits all season long.  So the Sox fly into Minneapolis, take the plastic field in that empty concrete clam shell,  and calmly dissect the Twins and keep the championship momentum going.  How great is that?

Mike Sirotka was brilliant for the victory.  Sure he gave up 10 hits in 6.2 innings, and was hardly an unbeatable presence on the mound.  So what?  He battled and showed heart--the same kind this team has delivered in spades all season long!  Jerry Manuel is right.  This game is a battle, and nobody has more warriors than our Sox.

Sirotka was down 3-0, but the Sox bats came right back.  Thursday's hero was Herbert Perry, the thirdbasemen we picked up for the price of waivers from last-place Tampa Bay last May.  He delivered an rbi double to start the Sox scoring.  Reserve outfielder Jeff Abbott plays only occasionally, but was next with a key hit to drive in the tying run.  Please note that Frank Thomas, Magglio Ordonez, Ray Durham, and Carlos Lee did not drive in any of these key runs.  How's that for a team?

The game now tied, the Sox bats really went to work chopping wood.  They erupted for four more runs in the fifth inning.  Again the key blow was delivered by "Waiver Boy" Perry, a 2-rbi double in with 2 outs.  Clutch city.

The Sox bullpen had no trouble preserving the lead and dispatched the Twins in easy fashion.  Chad Bradford, Kelly Wunsch, and Matt Ginter (not our "A" team bullpen by any stretch) allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings.  Beautiful.

Yeah, we have young guys with hardly any playoff experience.  We'll stay quiet about other fans' slights for now, but will relish just the same shoving it ten feet up their orifice when the heart and guts of this team carries it to victory next month.

To hell with playoff experience--it never got Cleveland over the top, did it?  Sox fans, the best is yet to come!
