Lowe pulls through!

(September 19, 2000)

Short Take:  A playoff preview?

Welcome to the playoff hunt again, Sox fans.  James Baldwin had some pain throwing in the bullpen before the game but not enough to shut him down completely; he'll get another shot to work it out.  The big news came in the game itself.  Sean Lowe is the likely replacement for James Baldwin in the playoff rotation.

And Tuesday night, Sean Lowe was as effective as a healthy James Baldwin.  We Sox fans can only hope it continues!  Sox win 6-2!

Sean Lowe made a claim to a place in the Sox playoff rotation with five shutout innings against Detroit.  He allowed just three hits and wiggled out of trouble inducing inning-ending groundouts in both the third and fourth innings.  He's now 4-1 and none of them were bigger than this one.  The noose tightens a bit more on rookies Jon Garland and Kip Wells--perform or else.  They've got the talent but they need to use it.

Meanwhile the Sox hitters came back to life.  After much fretting over having to face Detroit's knuckleballer, the Sox gave Lowe a fat lead to work with early.  The Sox scored two runs in each of the first three innings.  Ray Durham was 2 for 5 with a double and a ribbie, Frank Thomas was 3 for 4 with a ribbie, too.  Chris Singleton put an exclamation point on the night's hitting with a 2-run homerun in the third.

The Sox led 6-0 and you had the sense the guy on the mound knew exactly what to do with it.  When the last time you had that feeling, Sox fans?

Rookie Mark Buerhle looked good for his first five outs, then came unglued.  A single and a double and a single and a throwing error, and Buerhle was gone with two runs charged.  Kelly Wunsch quickly got the third out.  Chad Bradford and Keith Foulke finished it off.

Phil Garner is left to wonder about all the could-of-beens.  After bravely predicting his Tigers would win their last 13 games, Phil needs to come up with a new rallying cry.

May we suggest "Wait till Next Year"?  Oops, the Cubs already took it!
