What can you say about a line up that either pounds the daylights out of the ball, or simply doesn't show up?  The Sox have struggled through most of May because of a stalled offense that no longer can be counted on to pick up a young and  inexperienced Sox pitching staff.  Sox starter Dan Wright has been one of the inconsistent pitchers, but he didn't need too much help in Fenway Tuesday night.  Sox beat Boston 8-3.

Just as the 2000 and 2001 Sox either sank or swam with leadoff man Ray Durham, the 2002 Sox need Ken Lofton to be the straw that stirs the drink for the Mighty Sox "O".  He was the only guy who seemingly showed up for what became Monday night's debacle, but he was back at it again in this one.  Surprise--his teammates showed up, too!

Thanks to Lofton, the Sox were rolling from the very start.  Taking ball four on a 3-2 pitch meant he was on base to come home on Ray Durham's double.  Durham himself scampered home when Magglio Ordonez followed a double of his own.  Toss in a sacrifice fly by Carlos Lee, and the Sox were up 3-0 before Boston got their first at-bat.

No lead is safe in that bandbox, so you knew three runs weren't going to be enough.  As they've done so many times, the Sox kept pouring it on.  An Ordonez single and a Frank Thomas sacrifice added two more runs in the fifth, to expand a shrinking lead back to 5-2.

The Sox plated two more runs in the seventh, thanks to five consecutive singles by Lofton, Durham, Ordonez, Paul Konerko, and Thomas.  Sox Fans, our Pale Hose had Boston by the throat and simply weren't going to let go!

Meanwhile Dan Wright was impressive.  He struck out seven Red Sox hitters in 6.1 innings work, allowing three earned runs on five hits.  A performance like this in Boston ought to earn him a month's worth web gems and other accolades from ESPN's Peter Gammons.  Wright succeeded in the category most-critical to impressing Gammons' foggy mind--he performed great on a baseball diamond located east side of the Appalachian ridge.  Great job, Danny; we knew you could do it!

Damaso Marte and Keith Foulke pitched the remaining 2.2 innings in hitless fashion, Boston hitters flailing away like they had dinner engagements to meet after the game.  The Sox pounded out fifteen hits, and the two teams combined for eleven runs, but the game lasted just 2 hours 48 minutes.

Rubber game Wednesday, and then an off day before a weekend series back at Comiskey with Detroit.  Sox Fans, here's to more fast starts!
