 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

Extra Inning Thriller

(July 30, 2000)

Well Sox fans, what can you say about this one except thank God we got out of Anaheim with a series split.  The Sox looked beat and headed to their third straight loss, but hitting heroics in the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings send the Sox to a thrilling 11-7 victory over the Angels.

This four-hour marathon looked to be another lethargic loss for our Pale Hose.  Jim Parque was given a lead with a first inning homer by Jose Valentin and an rbi double by Chris Singleton in the second.  Still Parque couldn't make it hold up.  Benji Gil hit a homer for the second game in a row.  You may know Benji as the answer to the trivia question, "Who is the only ballplayer in the history of MLB to lose out on a job to Mike Caruso?"  You know your team is slumping when Benji Gil takes your pitchers deep two consecutive days.

The Sox were down 3-2 when Parque was lifted for Bill Simas with the bases loaded.   Knowledgeable Sox fans knew exactly what would happen next and Simas didn't disappoint.  Three runs later, Simas got the third out.

Ah, but the comeback was made so much sweeter.  The Sox got two runs back in the eighth on an Angels error (one of five on the night) and an rbi double by Frank Thomas.  The dramatic ninth inning started with Jeff Abbott's single with one out.  Abbott was unchallenged going to second base with two out.  Anaheim was looking for the game-winning out.  It never came.

Greg Norton drew a walk setting the stage for our one and only catcher, Mark Johnson.  With Charles Johnson still in transit to meet the team, Jerry Manuel had no choice but let the #9 batter hit for himself.  Everything worked out fine.

Johnson doubled into the right field alley, scoring Abbott and Norton to tie the game.  Ray Durham drove in Johnson and the Sox had the lead 7-6.

Kelly Wunsch and Keith Foulke could not shut the door in the ninth, and the game went to extra innings tied at 7.  If you think the Sox have bullpen trouble, you should see Anaheim's.  Troy Percival wasn't fooling anyone.  In one-third of an inning, the Sox pounded the Angels' closer for four runs and four hits.  11-7 Sox and Sox fans in the crowd tuned up their west coast rendition of "Na Na Hey Hey Hey".

Foulke retired the Angels 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth.  With Cleveland's loss, the lead is back up to 10.5 games and the Sox are playing their poorest baseball of the season.  We're all shaking in our boots over Cleveland's acquisition of ex-Sox Bob Wickman, Jason Bere, and Wil Cordero.  Can you please give Jaime Navarro a start, too?  The guy cracks us up -- especially wearing Tribe duds.
