 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

6 Ribbies for Big Hurt

(July 15, 2000)

Oh shucks, maybe the sky isn't falling after all.  What good is being a Sox fan if you can't find some doom and gloom to darken a Sox victory?  There wasn't much to fret over in this one.  Frank Thomas dismantled Tony LaRussa's Cardinals, sending home happy the Sox fans in the 40,000+ crowd at Comiskey 15-7 winners.

The Big Hurt was nearly unstoppable, delivering the two key hits that defined the game.  He jumped on Cardinals ace Darryl Kile with a three-run blast in the first inning, setting the tone for a game the Sox would never trail in.  Then in the seventh inning with the bases loaded but still needing a key hit to break out from a tenuous 2-run lead, Thomas delivered in a big way.  His double down the left field line and cleared the bases for his fourth, fifth, and sixth rbi's of the night.  That set the gears in motion for thirteen Sox hitters to bat -- all nine players reaching base safely at least once in the inning.  It wasn't over until nine Sox runs had crossed the plate.

Oh yeah, we're real worried about Tony LaRussa's team dominating us.  They've got Shawon Dunston in right field and Heathcliff Slocumb in their bullpen.  You think the Sox have problems?  Please!

Jim Parque handled the homeplate umpire's erratic strike zone just fine and pitched well enough to earn his ninth win against just two losses.  He allowed just two earned runs in five full innings pitched.  Bill Simas, Kelly Wunsch and Keith Foulke each picked up holds for scoreless relief work in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

George Will might feel Tony LaRussa a baseball genius but he was booed long and loud at Comiskey.  Having watched his team's ace roughed up by Sox hitters, and his clean up man konked by Parque after leaning in (again) against Sox pitching,  Tony resorted to the same reptilian tactics lesser brains like Phil Garner's might dream up.  Thus it was in the  bottom-half of that same inning our clean up hitter Magglio Ordonez was plunked by Kile -- on instructions by LaRussa, who is to say?  The Sox paid him back the best possible way, driving in Ordonez to score the sixth Sox run and open up a lead the Cardinals had been successfully shortening.  Thanks, Tony.  You're silly payback changed the game's momentum.

More dumb baseball from George Wills' "Genius" was forthcoming from Edgar Renteria -- stealing third base with two out.  Gee Edgar, did you forget you could score from second base without risk of ending the inning or is that the way "Genius Tony" drew it up on the clubhouse chalkboard?  What a fool!

It was 15-4 entering the ninth inning but reliever Jesus Pena had no clue what he was doing so two Cards homers and three runs crossed the plate with no more effect than to delay the fireworks show everyone was hanging around to watch after this four-hour marathon finally concluded.

A great night for Sox fans -- a Sox win, a big crowd, and some awesome fireworks -- the early show provided by Mr. Frank Thomas.
