 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
Part Five:  the seven days that made our season, consecutive road sweeps of New York and Cleveland.

Twelfth win of Month!

(June 16, 2000)

Well Sox fans, what great Sox team from the past do these '00 Sox remind you of?  It's still a bit to early but the month of June, 2000 is shaping up to compare with July, 1977 -- the winningest month in White Sox baseball history.  The glorious 1977 Southside Hitmen won 22 games that month.  Through June 16, our Hot Sox have now won 12 for the month.  They have taken an amazing five straight victories from two of the best teams in baseball, the Indians and world champion Yankees.  Dream the dream, Sox fans -- this team is for real.

Friday night's Sox victory came at the expense of David Cone and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, 3-1.  Staff ace James Baldwin gave up a solo shot homerun in the third inning and Cone appeared ready to make the one-run lead stand up, striking out five Sox hitters through the first five innings.

No way!  The Sox finally got to Cone in the sixth stringing together a single, a walk, a bunt, and a sacrifice fly by Magglio Ordonez -- tying the game at 1-1.  Could any team in the major leagues have executed this better?

Having knocked out Cone, the Sox went to work on the vaunted Yankee bullpen.  Reliever Mike Stanton was greeted by Chris Singleton with a leadoff triple in the seventh.  Pinch hitter Tony Graffaninino (the infielder we got for bullpen lint, Tanyon Sturtze) sacrificed home Singleton with a groundout to short.  The Sox added one more run in the ninth after Mark Johnson singled home Graffanino who doubled with two out in the inning.  This team rocks!

Meanwhile James Baldwin was nothing short of brilliant picking up his tenth win of the season.  He went into the eighth inning allowing nothing more than the solo homer, striking out five Yankees in the process.  Bob Howry came in and buzz sawed what was left of the world champions retiring all five Yankees he faced, preserving the win and picking up his third save of the season.

The Sox now have the best record in all of baseball, 42-24.

If you're a Sox fan and you aren't actively supporting this team, do the rest of us a favor and get out.  We don't need you masquerading as one of us, calling sports talk radio shows about your bitterness.  Get a life!  Admit you aren't a fan of anything anymore, and leave us be.  You won't be missed and your empty seat most certainly will be filled by a new generation eager to embrace the possibilities this young team possesses.
