Garland shines!

May 1 vs. Seattle.

Short take:  Seattle ain't so tough!

It rained, and it rained, and it rained.  And Sox Fans waited, and waited, and waited.  And when it was all over, only eight innings had been played.  Who cares; it's a regulation game.  Our beloved Pale Hose win again and go for the sweep on Thursday over Seattle and James "Big Inning" Baldwin.  Sox Fans, you've got to like our chances!

Seattle's undefeated road record is a distant memory.  The Sox seem to be paying them back for a pair of demoralizing defeats one month ago.  Lou Piniella got smart after last night's game, and gave Frank Thomas nothing to hit in this one.  The Big Hurt appears to be heating up, but could only draw three walks from Piniella's pitchers.  That's the kind of respect the big man deserves!

Unfortunately, the big timely hit just wasn't there for the Sox in this one.  Thomas never reached home even one time.  Like any top-drawer team, our beloved Hose found a way to win just the same.  Royce Clayton is proving to be an improbable homerun threat, crushing a solo dinger into the left field seats to spot the Sox a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

The Sox added two more runs in the fourth when Jose Valentin doubled home Magglio Ordonez, and Sandy Alomar hit a sacrifice fly to score Paul Konerko.

You wouldn't think three runs would be enough to win a ballgame against Seattle, but it was tonight thanks to starter Jon Garland.  The kid looked exceptionally sharp through five innings worked, shortened by rain delays.  Seattle managed just three hits off the kid.  Sox Fans are pinching themselves at the thought of this 22 year-old spending the next decade or so pitching like this on the South Side.  Hey, Sox Fans can dream, can't they?

The rain came and the game dragged on.  Seattle scored twice off reliever Antonio Osuna in the seventh, but this Sox team has the heart of a champion.  They answered the challenge with one run in the seventh, and five more in the eighth.  Those are the kind of runs that drive a dagger through the heart of the opposition--even the kind that won 116 games last year.  They were crying in their coffee up and down Puget Sound!

It's also worth noting that the Sox once again batted around for what seems like the millionth time this season.  The bottom-three reached base a combined 5 of 12 official at-bats, and batted in four of the team's eight earned runs.  Did last year's bottom-three achieve these numbers even one time the entire 2001 season?  Don't bet on it.

Bring your brooms tomorrow,  Sox Fans.  Good seats available!

Jon Garland

Five shutout innings, three hits allowed, 3 strikeouts and just 1 walk.  He also made a nifty fielding play to end a threat with a 1-6-3 double-play.
