 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

Baldwin Rolls!

(May 9, 2000)

That's more like it!

Sox fans, has there been a bigger effort or a more satisfying victory this entire season than the one James Baldwin delivered for our Pale Hose Tuesday evening?  I didn't think so.  The Sox get a masterful nine innings from the staff's defacto ace, mowing down the Boston Red Sox 6-0.  When it was over, Baldwin looked like he could pitch another nine innings.  It was HUGE for the team!  The four-game losing steak is over.

Baldwin scattered three hits, striking out eight (!) against one walk.  Boston never got a runner past first base after the fifth inning.  This is the kind of game that gets the Peter Gammons of the east coast media excited and starts the drumbeat for an all-star game appearance.  What better place to deliver an impressive victory than Boston's Fenway Park!  Hey Boston fans, JB has been pitching like this all season.  It ain't a fluke.

It was a scoreless tie until the top of the sixth when two key hits by Paul Konerko and Carlos Lee drove in three Sox runs and gave Baldwin the added room he needed to get after Boston's hitters.  The best news is that both Konerko and Lee went the opposite way with the pitch, which ought to get around the league quickly.  The Sox aren't pulling the ball every at-bat anymore.  Frank Thomas was 2 for 3, drawing two walks from Boston.  That set the table for Magglio Ordonez who didn't disappoint, driving in two runs.  Jeff Abbott got the start in centerfield (?), briefly got his average above the Mendoza Line, before falling back to .196 with a weak first pitch popup to end the sixth inning rally.  He left five men on-base before getting pulled in favor of Chris Singleton for late inning defense.  Next stop:  Charlotte.

The rubber game of the series is Wednesday evening in Boston.  The Sox return to Comiskey Friday night.
