WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Outduel the Tribe.

April 23 at Cleveland.

Short take:  Colon has nuthin' on the Sox!

Guess who is in first place, Sox Fans?  It's only April 23, and everybody knows you can't win a pennant in April.  However, nobody knows better than Sox Fans you can certainly lose a pennant in April, as the 2001 season showed.

Todd Ritchie has his most impressive start of the season lasting eight full innings, and Keith Foulke nails down the victory in shaky if not effective fashion.  The Sox beat Bartolo "Fat Boy" Colon 5-1 and, combined with a loss in St. Petersburg by the pigs from Minnesota, move into first-place.  It's been over a year since the last time that happened.  Woo hoo!!!

Sox Fans were worried about this game.  Having lost with ace Mark Buehrle on the mound Monday night, the prospect of beating the undefeated-at-home Tribe with Ritchie or Wednesday's starter Danny Wright seemed far-fetched.  Many Sox Fans still can't believe GM Kenny Williams gave up three pitchers to acquire Ritchie last December.  The Sox #2 starter put all those doubts to rest tonight.

Ritchie gave up leadoff dinger in the second inning to Peoria strikeout king,  Jim Thome.  The Sox starter gave up another hit after that for his third allowed on the night.

The Indians wouldn't get another hit for five consecutive innings.  Ritchie dominated them like nobody has all season at Jacobs Field.  He finished with eight strikeouts against one walk.

Meanwhile the Sox hitters had trouble getting started against Jumbo.  Through three innings, the Sox couldn't push anybody past second base.  Big Pants looked to make his one run lead hold up.

Finally in the fourth, Paul Konerko walked with two out.  Then Jose Valentin singled, pushing Pokey to second.  Carlos Lee was next stroking a 1-2 pitch to right for a double, scoring Konerko.  A lousy throw by rightfielder-wannabe Matt Lawton allowed Valentin to score, and suddenly the Sox had a 2-1 lead!

With Colon gone after six innings work, the Sox went to work on relief slug Mark Wohlers.  They strung together four hits to score two more runs in the seventh.  An insurance run in the ninth on Magglio Ordonez's rbi double gave the Sox a four run cushion.

Keith Foulke made life interesting for Sox Fans.  With bases loaded and only one out, he induced a game-ending doubleplay grounder.  Sheesh, will that recurring nightmare from last year inside the Hump Dome ever go away for Sox Fans?  85 years of futility says, "Probably not."

Ah, it just makes retelling the glorious tale to our grandchildren all the more interesting.  The Sox are in first place, and there are plenty of mountains of glory left to be climbed this season.  Sox Fans won't be satisfied until we scale the last one.

Take care of business tomorrow!
