Dog Day Dingers Dent Detroit!

April 20 vs. Detroit.

Short take:  Konehead leads the hit parade!

In yet another genius move by the Sox marketing department, this year's dog day promotion was moved to April.  Dogs seated in the outfield, panting in the August heat, somehow made the promotion memorable.  Naturally, they had to change it.  This promotion will go the way of McCuddy's tavern soon enough.  Maybe they'll rehire Joe Stephen to do wedding parties in the Stadium Club, too.

Oh, well... not to fret.  The action is on the field, and our beloved Sox were providing plenty of it on a cold windy day at Comiskey, a 12-5 thrashing of Detroit.

Anyone worried before about the lingering effects of losing to a knuckleballer the previous night need not have been.  The Sox pounded four homeruns off Detroit pitching, making this game into a laugher.

An rbi double by Magglio Ordonez started things in the first.  Slumping Jose Valentin followed in the second with a solo shot dinger.  Starter Jon Garland wasn't hitting on all cylinders, and Detroit managed to tie it with two runs in the third.

Not to fret!  Kenny Lofton (of course) started things the next half-inning with a walk.  He steals second, advances to third on an error, and one out later, the bases are loaded for Paul Konerko.

Ka-Bong!!!  Konehead clears the bases with his fourth career grand slam and suddenly the Sox are charging home to victory with a 6-2 lead.

The rest is just window dressing.  The Sox pounded Detroit for another four runs in the fourth inning, keyed by a two-run dinger by Frank Thomas, and a solo dinger by  Magglio Ordonez, back to back with the Big Hurt.

Garland lasted five innings to get the win.  Damaso Marte was effective in three innings relief.  Keith Foulke sent the Tigers down 1-2-3 in the ninth.  Not one thing to fret about!

Just another great day to be a Sox Fan!

Paul Konerko

Third inning grand slam broke up a tied game.  Finished 3 for 5 with 5 rbi's.  Not a bad day at the office!
